Letter of Introduction (posted January 20)
Hello, my name is Christopher Bennett. I am 16 years old, a junior at Roosevelt High School and am content with my high school experience so far. I have two siblings, both sisters that are older than me. My older sister, Elise attends the University of Iowa and has a minor in communications. She plans on taking a job in Minneapolis working for Otis Elevators. My younger sister Erin recently transferred from the University of Iowa to Iowa State University due her desire in fashion, which she is going to focus on. My parents names are Steve and Liz. My dad works in the housing industry and is a realtor. My mother is a school nurse for the Des Moines Public Schools. Many times when I am finding myself in a pressured or difficult decision i turn to one of my family members because i know they have my back and want the best for me. As I have grown older, I have learned that family is the most important thing you have in life and you must value every second you spend with them.
I have many hobbies that I enjoy and occupy a good proportion of my time. Being 6 foot 4 inches, it is pretty obvious that i play basketball. I began playing when i was in 1st grade and haven't stopped since. I play for Roosevelt and hope to help lead our team to the state tournament at the Wells Fargo Arena. Over the past five or six summers i have spent a great deal of time traveling to multiple individual and team camps. I also play for an AAU team that travels and competes in national tournaments. Other than basketball, golf is another sport that I love to play. My freshman and sophomore year i played golf but unfortunately didn't try out this year so I would be able to focus on basketball. I am very interested in playing this next summer thought because I know it is something i can play all of my life. Lastly, I have an addiction for video gaming, and although i know it benefits me in no way, like most other boys I play a lot of video games. Usually it is the reason I am incapable of completing my homework. As i get older I hope i can pull away from this addiction because it is lazy and will not help me out physically or intellectually. If you ever see me outside of school, i most likely will be listening to music. I am big fan of all kinds of music as long as it has the right beat. I love listening to some old rap from the 90's but also will take some Kanye West or J. Cole. My father is a big rock & roll fan so it is inevitable that i am interested in it as well. Hearing every song ever created by the Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd rubs off on me a little. I hope this gives you a little information on my life and hobbies, if you want to know anything else about me just ask and I'm sure I can give you an answer
haha i can't believe that you listen to 90's rap! and i never knew that you played golf. but you sound very busy without it - Deanna
Personal Reflection on Topic of Inquiry(posted January 27 -- Peer Response January 29)
As i began thinking of a topic of inquiry, no ideas that i had dealt with me. Yes, bullying is a big problem in our world that needs to be fixed, but personally i have never been bullied so it is hard to go into depth about a topic that has never directly occured to me. Obesity is another major problem that came into my mind but once again I haven't had a weight problem my entire life so i was unable to write about that. So i was stuck with the question of "what major event has drastically changed my life child hood years?" and I think the only accurate answer would be where does each individual fit in and who are your real friends.
Over my past 10 years, like most kids i have made many friends but also lost many friends. It would be false for me to say that i have always had a friend at my side who could be there for me when i need them. Through middle school I added many new friends to my life and as i look back now, most of them aren't there for me. In our world it isn't easy to find that one true friend that you can trust and as you get older it is only harder to find that person. I think people are always so worried about themselves and forgetting about who they truely are and that is the reason why it is so easy to lose a friend or not be able to find a true friend. As I look at all of the pathetic girls throughout middle school and high school, I laugh at them for the stress that they go through. I was not able to keep up on who is best friends or who hates who. Drama is the key to all of this. One wrong look with them and all hell breaks loose. I can't imagine what it would be like going through such drama with my guy friends. Maybe the fact that i am a male is the reason i was never able to understand the reasoning behind this. When i was younger, about 7th and 8th grade, i was jelous of my sister Erin. Erin had more friends than i ever could think to have and it made me angry to see her hanging out with different people always. I didn't know what it was like to have so many friends. Now as I see my sister, she has about half as many friends, mostly different people than she was friends with back then. I am able to see that none of the "friends" that i thought she had back then were nothing but a phase in her life that would soon end. Don't get me wrong, my sister still has a lot of friends that she is continues to keep in touch with, but it is funny to see who her true friends have been throughout these years and which ones were fake friends. Now that i am older and able to be myself not caring about whether people will like the person that i am, I know that a very important role in my life is to be myself around everyone. I know that if I am myself, I won't be friends with everyone, and i probably won't even have a lot of friends, but i would rather live my life and be who i am than to live a lie around everyone and have more friends. I would never want to forget who I am and what kind of a person i am. So i guess my main message in my topic of inquiry is that friends will come and go, but it is the friends who stay at your side the longest that will determine the kind of person you are and that it is important to stay true to everyone else but most importantly stay true to yourself.
i like that you didnt pick something like bullying or obesity since neither of those things apply to you. i think that the topic you choose fits weel and i think that it is something that you would be able to expand on.- Deanna Rough Draft Definition (posted February 3 -- Peer Response February 5)
Sportsmanship is a noun meaning to practice the skill of sportsman like conduct, as in fairness and courtesy. It is exhibited in every sport, whether in the NBA, NFL, or even the residtential election everyone should know what builds sportsman ship. As i researched about this i found that many children's websties include sportsmanship columns about how to be a "Cheerful loser I believe anger and disappointment are natural emotions someone feels when they lose. It's hard to swallow your pride and congratulate the winning team but that's what sportsmanship is all about.
As an athlete i strive to be the best I can be being a good character at heart and understanding morally what is right to do even when you lose is a true aspect of character. Fair play is a property that goes into being a good sport. To give someone the same chance you do at winning allows for a fair fight to win. Most sports have a referee which allo for a bias opinion of what is fair. This is a vital role in our sports world today. Millions ride on winning games and people get too caught up in the intensity of the sport to realize how unsportsman like their actions are.
One thing I always do after a game no matter if we won or loss is going up to the other team and shaking their hands. Even though i may have lost which is hard when you are very competitive, they played a good game and deserve respect from both sides of the court. Respect and sportsmanship go hand in hand. Each are very important to how you play the game and both shape you into the player you are. Sportsmanship is an aspiration of ethos that a sport will be enjoyed with proper consideration for fairness, ethics, respect, and a sense of fellowship with one's compepitors. Sportsmanship also is a vital piece of our sports world and becomes a part of who you are as an athlete. It makes one learn self control and discipline and gives the opportunity to grow as a human being. Sportsmanship is to act kindly and justly even in your greatest defeat.
I like the term that you chose to describe. I think that you can use more examples and misconceptions in the essay to make it stronger. I also like the tone that you set, but use of stronger vocabulary would make it clearer totithe reader.- Deanna

You have some very good examples! I likthat hat you talk about how you did research on the topic and your personal opinion on it. I think that some of your examples could possibly become their own paragraph to show that they are an idea or their own. -Deanna Final Definition (posted February 17 -- Peer Response February 19 )

I thought this essay was really hard to get accopmlished, THe idea is good but it was difficult to formulate an essay on just one word. I also thought the structure was hard to keep going throughout the whole essay. I think that the rubic was a little vauge and hard to into my work.

As an athlete i strive to be the best I can be by being a good character at heart and understanding morally what is right to do even when you lose is a true aspect of character. By being a good sport and allowing others the same respect you are given, qualities of fairness and justice are built within your character. To give someone the same chance you do at winning allows for a fair fight to win. For example, when one is playing basketball, cheap shots and crap talking is a way to be unsportsman-like. The opposite of sportsmanship, unsportsman-like conduct is anything that mistreats players of the other team. With the competitive nature most poeple have, unsportsmanlike conduct is aooarent in most games. That is why every sports has a referee which allow for a bias opinion on what is fair or the rules of the game This is a vital role in our sports today. Millions of people watch the games on tv and it is because of the media that the game becomes so intense for the ones playing it. I believe that it is this intinesity that drives paylers to act unsportsmanlike when they otherwise would have reacted normally. Getting out of line is a concept that corrupts most people in sports today because they are unable to control their actions.

Sportsmanship is Respect, Professionalism is Success Attitude is an important quality in life that can change the perception of someone. Being able to hold yourself and the people are you with respect goes a long ways no matter what occupations and hobbies you choose to pursue. Sportsmanship is the fair conduct considered fitting for a sportsperson, including observance of the rules of fair play, respect for others, and graciousness in losing. Having sportsmanship in a sport will allow others to gain respect in a person. Professionalism is the skill, competence, or character expected of a member of a highly trained profession. A big part of being successful can simply be from the effort that is put into what you are doing. I think that this essay was kind of hard to accomplish. I feel like I was stuck multiple times throughout the essay, and had no idea how to completee it. I do think that I learned how to analyze two certain things and analyze them to a certain extent. I feel like I was not able to reach as far indepth and provide persuading arguments for this essay. I think my topics were easy to compare and provide information for but it wasnt informed enough to complete the essay as the rubic has outlined.

After the shot clock was added, the points per game average increased in both the NBA and college. This upsurge in points has been a big growth in attendance every year and continuing to keep the audience interested. Equipment is one thing in sports that allows the athlete to excel only to a certain point. Talent must guide each athlete to excellence while the equipment used is only something to help. Although, some sports rely primarily on the equipment used to escalate their game. In football, pads, helmets and cleats can provide an abundant amount of support, but the talent the player acquires is more important than all of those. The football equipment used fifty years ago would be pitiful to football today, leather helmets compared to newly plastic helmets used today not only allow for more protection but also allows fewer players to be injured. They would be much weaker and the material would be very cheap. This is a huge change that would improve football extensively because injury was reduced and mobility was now improved. These are just two examples of how equipment advanced through history for the better. Many times change does not always happen the way people want it too and it happens for the worse. As sports have evolved, the modifications made are mainly beneficial. Sports have strongly assisted entertainment in our society because of these changes and are a big reason for the success they have today. Without these adjustments, it would not be as exciting or influential to many kids and adults. In conclusion, the revolution that has been created has occurred partially because of how exciting each sport has become. Without these details, many of the games we now watch would not be as enjoyable. Final Argument (posted April 20 -- Peer Response April 23)

Now days, sources like ESPN and other media sources enable access for kids to see all they want about any athlete. So many children in our world need roles models that they can believe in. All professional athletes must fulfill these expectations to not only perform on the court, but also off. The shot clock is the biggest change in basketball ever. This great countdown has evolved what was once a slow paced game into a fast and more exciting sport to play and also watch. With the shot clock in the NBA, a team is only able to hold the ball for twenty four seconds before it is a turnover. In college basketball, the same rule applies but they are required thirty five seconds before a turnover occurs. Although this change has not been applied to high school basketball, many people are pushing for the rule to pass and hope for the day that it occurs.
So i guess my main message in my topic of inquiry is that friends will come and go, but it is the friends who stay at your side the longest that will determine the kind of person you are and that it is important to stay true to everyone else but most importantly stay true to yourself.
i like that you didnt pick something like bullying or obesity since neither of those things apply to you. i think that the topic you choose fits weel and i think that it is something that you would be able to expand on.- Deanna

Sportsmanship is Respect, Professionalism is Success
Attitude is an important quality in life that can change the perception of someone. The same aspect is applied with professionalism and can be a huge part in having success in one’s life.
In sports today, many people are viewed upon their attitude towards the game they are playing as much as the actual skill they obtain. The same principle is used with a person’s profession. For example, a school teacher may have the knowledge of being amazing at their profession, but their attitude off the job may change the way people perceive them in life. A big part of being successful can simply be from the effort that is put into what you are doing. Sportsmanship is the idea that an athlete is able to play fair whether they win or lose and never let their emotions interfere with the game.

Professionalism is the skill, competence, or character expected of a member of a highly trained profession. The same aspect is applied with professionalism; this can be a huge part in having success in one’s life.
In sports today, many people are attributed to from their attitude towards the game they play as much as the actual skill they obtain. The same principle is used with a person’s profession. For example, a school teacher may have the knowledge of being perfect at their profession, but their attitude off the job may change the way people perceive them in life. A big part of being successful can simply be from the effort that is put into what you are doing on and off the job. Sportsmanship is the idea that an athlete is able to play fair whether they win or lose. What sets this aside from a normal athlete is that they never let their emotions interfere with the game and can use this mentality to be a leader. In sports today, you see many unsportsmanlike situations between players and even coaches. It could be anything from players not shaking hands at the end of a game or even two coaches exchanging harsh words towards each other.
Professionalism plays a huge part in many peoples success because it helps them understand how to strive for their goals without violating the rules and motivates people to achieve their goals with responsibility. Being able to handle the outcome of goals can be a good example of professionalism. Not achieving a goal is something that happens to everyone in life, it’s just a part that no one likes. This is where one must be capable of bouncing back and continue to work as hard as they can to obtain the goal. Putting the tail between ones leg is a signal that they are weak and soft. But returning even stronger is way to show professionalism and that you are not weak. Sportsmanship can be portrayed in a similar action. In a basketball game, many times one team is down by a lot at half time. This is where having the quality of sportsmanship can be very important to come out the second half with rapid fire and be more aggressive than ever. That is the only way one can achieve the goal and win the game, but it starts with one’s attitude toward what they are doing and their belief in it also.

Throughout the past century, the idea of professional sports has changed drastically and altered many thoughts of the way most people perceive them. Each sport has changed for the better and also for the worst. Adding minor details is all it needs to become legendary. As these changes continue to develop in each sport, a lot of people feel that it should stay the same and the sport would be better how it was originally created. Anything from the three-point line being added in basketball to graphite shafts in golf have had major impacts on the outcome of the game. Although it may complicate things, change in sports rules, regulations and equipment has helped many sports become very popular in our world.
The role of many sports athletes in our society today can be symbolized as more than just an athlete, more than just someone with a great talent for a sport.
Many times change does not always happen the way people want it too and it happens
for the worse.

Argumentative Essay
They are stars and idols to many kids growing up. They inspire many kids that have nothing but a dream to grow up and become just like them. It is important for these star athletes to reach out to these kids and be a leader for them. Fifty years ago, without TV’s and video games, kids were not able to view athletes with such passion for a sport.
After the shot clock was added, the points per game average increased in both the NBA and college. This upsurge in points has been a big growth in attendance every year and continuing to keep the audience interested.
